FOR RENT
In lieu of a performer, unexpected equipment and gadgetry adds an exciting twist to the big event. You can rent (or in some cases, inexpensively purchase) food and entertainment machines for the festivities. Bonus: Dad will love it.
CONCESSIONS
For a party with a circus or carnival theme, parents can wheel out their very own concession cart. Kids can step right up to watch cotton candy being made, get a bag of freshly popped corn, or gobble a hot dog. Professional-quality concession equipment is available for rent (or purchase) from many resources, among them:
Ace Party Rental Popcorn machine cart with 100 servings, $125; ice cream cart, $125; frankfurter cart, $125; cotton candy machine with 70 servings, $95; Sno-Kone machine and cart with 100 servings, $125. (718-445-2600, acepartyrental.com)
Bed, Bath & Beyond Purchase scaled-down versions of a hot dog roller, $40; old-style popcorn maker, $30; and Sno-Kone machine, $30. (bedbathandbeyond.com)
Classic Party Rentals Popcorn machine cart with enough paper bags and oil for 100 bags of popcorn, $135; ice cream cart, $250 (dry ice not included); hot dog cart, $250. Food not included. Also available: pretzel warmers, cotton candy machines. (212-752-7661, classicpartyrentals.com)
KARAOKE
High School Musical, Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana—even preschoolers know all the words to the songs from these acts. Yes, karaoke is a crowd-pleaser, and by belting out the hottest hits of their generation, the guests make their own entertainment. Putting on a musical at home is as simple as buying an inexpensive karaoke machine (we found one at Radio Shack for $70) and some CDs. But if you have no desire to play Dick Clark in your kid’s version of Birthday Bandstand, you can hire an outside company like Sing4Karaoke (basic packages start at $150/hour; 201-420-7891, sing4karaoke.com) to bring the music, a DJ and a professional singer to you and get the party started right.

I have to agree with Grace, Tanya True is amazing with children (and adults love her too)! I've been witness to several off-the-charts fun birthday parties with Tanya rocking out with the children. She has original songs, tons of energy, a great voice, and the ability to make everybody at a party giggle, dance, and not want the event to end.
One of the best NYC entertainers - bar none - is Looney Lenny. They are top-notch and make a personal connection with everyone at the party. Always tremendous performances!
You didn't list anyone who does Dance Parties on that list! What about Christie Newman? She does amazing dance parties for kids all ages!
Thank you so much for including Mario the Magician in your Birthday Party feature! www.mariothemagician.com
