CRAFTING
You know what they say about “idle hands.” A fun craft project—supervised by Mom and Dad or by a hired helper—will keep 100 little fingers busy.
Treat the small set to a “Make Your Own Softdough Party,” where guests mix up, play with and then take home their own tub of the stuff (get the recipe here). Or try a simple pasta-necklace project: String uncooked ziti or rigatoni onto ribbon, and let the kids paint and glue glitter onto the “beads.”
Tweens can paint their own canvas tote bag or wooden frames. Similar items are available, along with fabric markers or paints, at resources like discountschoolsupply.com and createforless.com. The Melissa & Doug line (amazon.com) features a number of kid-friendly project kits with everything your guests need to make piggybanks ($11.50/pack of two), princess mirrors ($14/pack of two) and treasure chests ($14/pack of two).
Parents who are all thumbs and want someone else to do the crafting—and cleanup!—can call one of these local experts:
Citibabes Crafters from this family club in Soho will head to your apartment or party space with a load of fun supplies, set up the activity, then make the mess disappear. $200/two hours for 12 kids (212-334-5440, ext 121; citibabes.com)
RePlayGround Tiffany Threadgould teaches little ones craft projects using recycled materials like empty soda bottles and old record album covers and cereal boxes (materials included in rate). $200/1.5 hours plus half-hour setup (347-885-9368, replayground.com)

I hired Ben Nemzer, the magician for my 6 year old's Birthday party, after seeing him at at FAO Schwarz, in the private party room. We couldn't afford to throw our party at FAO, but he came to our home on the UES and even the adults were astounded by what he was doing. His age appropriate humor, professionalism, and overall likeability made not only his show a total success, but Devon's entire Birthday. His website is BenNemzer.com and he come highly recommended from a satisfied mom!
I have to agree with Grace, Tanya True is amazing with children (and adults love her too)! I've been witness to several off-the-charts fun birthday parties with Tanya rocking out with the children. She has original songs, tons of energy, a great voice, and the ability to make everybody at a party giggle, dance, and not want the event to end.
One of the best NYC entertainers - bar none - is Looney Lenny. They are top-notch and make a personal connection with everyone at the party. Always tremendous performances!
You didn't list anyone who does Dance Parties on that list! What about Christie Newman? She does amazing dance parties for kids all ages!
Thank you so much for including Mario the Magician in your Birthday Party feature! www.mariothemagician.com
