PRACTICALLY FREE
One planner we spoke to divulged, “Really, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great party.” Another confided, “At the end of the day, kids just want to eat cake and have fun.” With that and our trying times in mind, party ideas that barely cost a thing deserve special mention. Stark suggests a return to our collective party roots: “Go to the Strand and look for ideas in vintage party books.”
CLASSIC PARTY GAMES
Party games never really fell out of fashion—even computer-age kids will become breathless over the excitement and competition of hot potato, musical chairs, charades and pin the tail on the donkey. The old-timey disposable version of PtTotD can be found at Party City for a couple of bucks, while a fancier reusable version (above) is available at eeboo.com for $11.
TEA PARTY
Bust out that tiny china tea set, fashion some finger sandwiches, and set out the scones and cakes (hot cocoa can replace herbal tea for sweeter palates). The best part is, you can encourage little ladies and gents to dress up in their finery and act the part.
MOVIE “PREMIERE”
Another role for the birthday girl or boy to take on: movie star. Get your hands on a hot new DVD release like Bedtime Stories or spring for pay-per-view, then roll out a “red carpet” for the guests. Serve copious amounts of popcorn, Raisinets and Sno-Caps. Give out awards as favors.
SCAVENGER HUNT
For the younger crowd, create themed clues that lead to a grand prize within your apartment. Or draw up a list of easily obtained items (a small box from the local pizzeria, a used-up MetroCard, etc.), and set older children a-hunting in the ’hood with a time limit.

I hired Ben Nemzer, the magician for my 6 year old's Birthday party, after seeing him at at FAO Schwarz, in the private party room. We couldn't afford to throw our party at FAO, but he came to our home on the UES and even the adults were astounded by what he was doing. His age appropriate humor, professionalism, and overall likeability made not only his show a total success, but Devon's entire Birthday. His website is BenNemzer.com and he come highly recommended from a satisfied mom!
I have to agree with Grace, Tanya True is amazing with children (and adults love her too)! I've been witness to several off-the-charts fun birthday parties with Tanya rocking out with the children. She has original songs, tons of energy, a great voice, and the ability to make everybody at a party giggle, dance, and not want the event to end.
One of the best NYC entertainers - bar none - is Looney Lenny. They are top-notch and make a personal connection with everyone at the party. Always tremendous performances!
You didn't list anyone who does Dance Parties on that list! What about Christie Newman? She does amazing dance parties for kids all ages!
Thank you so much for including Mario the Magician in your Birthday Party feature! www.mariothemagician.com
