GO TO:Dylan’s Candy Bar
We like the M&M and Hershey’s stores as much as the next chocoholic, but for sheer variety, we venture to this two-story Upper East Side emporium where you can find every kind of sweet imaginable. Venerable (and appropriately themed) songs like Sammy Davis Jr.’s “The Candy Man” are piped into the huge, brightly hued space (which even smells like sugar), where you’ll also find one of NYC’s finest ice-cream bars. You can choose from a staggering selection of sundaes—16, to be exact, with enticing names like Perfectly Peanut Butter—but the kids we know go in droves for the Classic ($8.99). Here’s why: It consists of three scoops of ice cream in a sea of sticky-rich hot fudge sauce piled high with whipped cream, a maraschino cherry (of course) and marshmallows. Kids will be awed by the mammoth size—the sundaes are easily seven inches high; parents will appreciate the Max & Mina’s ice cream, homemade in Flushing. Dylan’s specialty may be candy, but the ice cream is worth the wait. Just one word of warning: The place is packed with teens on weekday afternoons, so for a more mellow visit, a Saturday around noon may be your best bet. 1011 Third Ave at 60th St (646-735-0078, dylanscandybar.com).
NEXT BEST THING:Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory
Manhattan views and close proximity to Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park aren’t the only draws for this old-fashioned parlor and longtime Time Out Kids favorite. All of the goodies are prepared on the premises, including the hot fudge (a delicious, gooey dark chocolate unlike any plain ol’ syrup we tried) and the ice cream, which is made in small batches. Topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries, the sundae will pass muster with even the choosiest Whole Foods–shopping parent. 2 Old Fulton St at Furman St, Dumbo, Brooklyn (718-246-3963).
