GO TO:San Loco
If E. coli has scared you away from a certain corporate taco chain, that’s just as well. The 20-year-old family-owned San Loco—with four locations in the city—offers an array of cheap combos ($2), topped with standard but always fresh ingredients: shredded iceberg lettuce, chopped plum tomatoes, and grated cheddar cheese in a yellow-corn shell that’s crunchy, just the way kids like it. And don’t worry: Kids won’t get burned by spicy heat unless they ask for it; sauces range from Mild to Stupid, a sinister concoction of various chilies. For young gourmands who want to move beyond basic fillings (beef, bean or chicken), there’s breaded catfish, chipotle chicken (slow-cooked in smoked jalapeño sauce) and, most delicious of all, the pork pipian—tender shredded pork simmered in green pumpkin seed sauce. Oh, and they’re all made from scratch. 151 Ave A between 9th and 10th Sts (212-982-5653, sanloco.com). Check the website for other locations.
NEXT BEST THING:Clemen’s
Although this modest taqueria offers a variety of taco choices, the soft-shell chicken option trumps the rest with its zippy blend of herbs, tomatillos and peppers. As you and your kids eat, admire the unique decor of bizarre statues and odd, funky murals. 252 Prospect Park West between Prospect Ave and Windsor Pl, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-768-0909).
