GO TO:Burger Joint
We think these burgers are the best in town, but that alone isn’t what makes coming here such fun: There’s a certain thrill in walking through the lobby of a fancy hotel (midtown’s Le Parker Meridien) to a secret narrow corridor, where you’ll see only one hint of what you’re about to find—an illuminated neon burger sign. Sweep past the velvet curtain and suddenly you’re in a greasy, wood-paneled, retro-looking diner, full of overexcited carnivores. (Don’t even think about bringing the kids on a weekday at lunchtime, unless your life isn’t quite stressful enough.) Order a burger with “the works” ($4.50–$5.50). Kids can watch ’em being made, and salivate at the sight of the thick patties flaming on the grill. 118 W 57th St at Sixth Ave (212-245-5000, parkermeridien.com/burger.htm).
NEXT BEST THING:brgr
The mix of ingredients at this recently opened restaurant is proprietary, but all that matters about its three-pounder ($7–$11) is the flavor (excellent) and the quality (steroid-, growth hormone–, and antibiotic-free). Kids can add unusual toppings, such as herb mayonnaise, Gruyère, avocado and Vidalia onion marmalade. 287 Seventh Ave between 26th and 27th Sts (212-488-7500).

Turkey
GO TO:BLT Burger
It’s damned hard to find a turkey patty that’s not been cooked to death, with the flavor and consistency of sawdust. Considering BLT Burger’s pedigree (Laurent Tourondel is the owner–executive chef), it’s little surprise that this eatery has quickly become a destination for turkey burger fans. Slightly larger and way plumper than a McDonald’s patty, BLT’s offering ($7) is perfectly juicy and won’t scare away kids with sensitive palates. With its casual decor (a far cry from the other, more upscale locations in the BLT Restaurant family) and prompt, friendly service, this is a fantastic spot to bring kids in need of a high-quality tryptophan fix. 470 Sixth Ave between 11th and 12th Sts (212-243-8226, bltburger.com).
NEXT BEST THING:Sandwich Planet
This tiny storefront in Hell’s Kitchen boasts a tremendous, man’s-knuckle-sized burger. Charred on the outside and moist inside, it’s also a bargain at $5.45. Trust us: It even makes up for the dismal Port Authority location. 534 Ninth Ave between 39th and 40th Sts (212-273-9768, sandwichplanet.net).

Veggie
GO TO:Fetch
Ordering your child a veggie burger is a fine way to sneak actual produce into her diet. But many of these patties taste, frankly, like cardboard or fall apart when you eat them. That’s not the case at Fetch. This dog-themed restaurant on the Upper East Side prides itself on top-notch food and a kid-friendly vibe; young guests are even encouraged to bring a framed photo of their pooch to hang on the wall. Topped with avocado, the restaurant’s eight-ounce Veggie Burger ($9.95) has a crisp texture and a zesty, fresh flavor. The secret? “We use a potato base, instead of soy, and then mix in fresh vegetables like broccoli, peas, peppers and corn,” says owner–executive chef Adam Powers. “It gives the burger more of a potato-pancake taste, which kids love.” 1649 Third Ave between 92nd and 93rd Sts (212-289-2700, fetchny.com).
NEXT BEST THING:Burger King
Yes, you heard us. The chain uses Morningstar Farms Garden Veggie Patties, straight from your supermarket’s frozen-food section, for its BK Veggie Burgers ($2.79). Sure, you can make them at home, but when one’s sandwiched in a sesame seed bun and tricked out with fast-food fixins, your kid just might believe it’s not good for him. Visit bk.com for locations.
