The great exchange
It’s possible to dress your babe without spending a dime. Clean out the closets and join a local clothing swap to refresh your kids’ fashions. At the end of the day, leftovers get bagged up for charity.
Kiddo Swaps
After hosting successful clothing swaps for women in New York City and the Bay Area, Suzanne Agasi is expanding into kiddie territory: Her next event, which is planned for late summer or early fall, will include children’s clothing. Pay an admission fee, drop off your bag of has-beens; while volunteers sort and organize the goods, you’ll be plied with snacks, spa services and goody bags before you shop. Go to clothingswap.org for details.
Totsswapshop.com
Upper West Side mom and Web developer Mabel Chan started this site a year ago. The beauty part: No cash changes hands. All shopping is done on a points system. Simply post images and descriptions of your tyke’s outgrown clothes, and immediately get a 20-point credit to spend; as your items are claimed, you accumulate more points. (You can buy additional points via credit card.) The “seller” can choose to exchange goods in person or ship items to out-of-towners, with the buyer paying for shipping. Go to totsswapshop.com.
Park Slope Food Co-op Clothing Exchange
What started as an adult clothing exchange by co-op members years ago has evolved into several events for kids’ goods, including a books and toys exchange on May 30. Unlike membership to the food co-op, these events are free and open to the public. 782 Union St between Sixth and Seventh Aves, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-622-0560, foodcoop.com)
New York City Explorers
In addition to their Boerum Hill play space, nanny-share program and kids’ classes, owners Keyanna N. Murrill and Kisha Edwards-Gands organize kids’ clothing swaps a few times a year. Bring in a bag of clothes and get credit toward classes or “bucks” to spend at the swap. 388 Atlantic Ave between Bond and Hoyt Sts, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn (718-625-6923, nycityexplorers.com)
