“We live very vertically,” says mom Chandra Graves of her four-story brownstone. “Owen’s room is on the top floor, so once you go up there, you’re away from everything else.” For that reason, his parents wanted his space to have nooks for sleeping, creating, reading and playing. With the help of interior designer Jennifer Ward, they were able to achieve just that.
Public displays
Choose a storage unit like this one from minjake.com. As children get older, they can use it as a bookcase.
Room for friends
Growing up, Chandra was always jealous of kids who had bunk beds, so she decided to get a set for Owen. The bottom one is a double—it’s great for sleepovers and for when Grandma and Grandpa come to visit. This set from csnstores.com comes with safer-to-climb stairs instead of a ladder. It also has drawers under the bottom bed and within the steps.
Multitasking decor
Look for flooring that doubles as a toy, like this rug from thelandofnod.com. Its fun pattern of interweaving roads will keep kids busy for hours—and limit the number of play sets you need to buy and store.
Pop star
Add vibrant color without creating stimulation overload by painting a feature wall.
Craft king
Unleash your little one’s artistic talent by setting up an art area. That way, he can get messy without ruining the kitchen table. These vintage chairs from eBay are a bit of a splurge ($200 each), but the rest of the setup can be found at Ikea: a tabletop paper holder ($6), roll of paper ($5) and cutlery caddies ($4 each). Add markers, glitter and paint, and you’re all set.
Design tip!
Kids’ art doesn’t have to be childish. At allposters.com, you can find this print and others.—LF

i like the bed, does anyone know on the nyc area where i can see the actual bed (not in a catalogue).thanks.
Do you know the color name and brand of the bold blue wall color in Owen's room? Thanks!
The room is a childs dream but...the headboard is not a good idea, as the chalk will tumble onto the bed (messy and unhealthy). A space on the wall (painted with school board paint) might be better..
Fabulous. I specially love Bryce's play table with the side shelves. Any idea where I can find them? Thank you!
Isn't that a Denyse Schmidt Quilt? http://www.dsquilts.com/
We were really sorry to hear that Walmart isn't selling that shelf anymore! Just a reminder that you can find a similar one at Pottery Barn Kids at this link: http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/madison-3-shelf-bookrack/?pkey=cbookcases
