Milkshake
Great Day
Milkshake Music, $14.
With the release of its fourth studio album, Baltimore-based Milkshake proves its kiddie-pop prowess with a compelling mix of bright harmonies and hook-laden lyrics. As you might guess from the CD’s name, Milkshake grooves on optimism. Upbeat songs like “My Happy Place” and the title track are very danceable, but just this side of too sweet. The quartet does its finest work on tunes like the rockabilly-and-rap ditty “Recipe,” and other pieces that mix things up a bit. Take the surprisingly bummer ballad “Enemies” (“You mean the world to me?/?But there are times?/?I think we’re enemies”). Sometimes that spoonful of sugar isn’t really needed after all.—Kay Boatner
