We asked Heather Hutchins, M.S., R.D., a registered dietitian, to weigh in.
What’s an acceptable portion size of ice cream for kids?
Half a cup is a good rule of thumb for both kids and adults. And go for a small cup rather than a cone. That way it’s much easier to control the portion size.
Is it okay for kids to haveice cream two or three times a week?
Yes, if you’re treating it as their sweet for the day. But if they’re eating a bag of chips or a candy bar for their afternoon snack and then want ice cream after dinner, that’s not okay. Also, if your child already has a weight problem, save ice cream for a once-a-week treat.
How can parents make ice cream a more balanced, healthy snack?
If you’re buying ice cream in the grocery store, look for products that are reduced-fat. Read the label: The percentage of saturated fat in each serving should be less than 10 percent. When you’re at the ice cream parlor, stick with basic flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla and Coffee, and limit toppings to fresh fruit or a tablespoon of chopped almonds or walnuts. You wouldn’t eat a candy bar and then ice cream, right? That’s basically what you’re doing when you choose Rocky Road and then load it with sugary toppings like cookies or Gummi bears.
Can you recommend healthier cold treats than ice cream?
Fruit pops are great, but make sure the packaging says they’re made with whole fruit. Otherwise, it’s sugar water on a stick.—Michelle Hainer
