Got an X-Men–obsessed grade-schooler, but worried that the upcoming Wolverine movie might be a bit intense? Then Nicktoons has come to your rescue. In a savvy bit of pop-culture synergy, the network is debuting Wolverine and the X-Men, a new half-hour animated series with a fresh (and more or less G-rated) approach to the popular franchise.
The spin-off begins with Wolverine, the angry, alienated antihero with the badass ’do, leaving his fellow X-Men to pursue his own life. But after a nasty run-in with the Mutant Response Division, he decides to get the old gang back together to fight the forces of evil…and government bureaucracy.
All the usual mutants are present--Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Beast, Iceman and Shadowcat, to name a few favorites--and the epic storytelling and thrilling action sequences will engage comic-book fans of all ages. Dean Grinsfelder’s impressive original score is also noteworthy and a welcome change from the usual droning animated soundtrack. The show may not put forth any life lessons, but what it lacks in educational value it makes up for in pure entertainment.--Patrisha Holly Zabrycki
