We’re fans of this tourist hot spot precisely because its summer indie-music roster isn’t kid-focused. The open venue is easy to slip in and out of, so that parents can sample the shows they want (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, CasioKids, Black Moth Super Rainbow), with youngsters in tow—then quickly hit the road pre-meltdown. But little ones are treated to activities galore on the carnivalesque Children’s Day, which closes with a bang: fireworks! While the setting is less parklike than those of other festivals, that means bathrooms and food are readily available. Subway: A, C to Broadway–Nassau St; J, M, Z, 2, 3, 4, 5 to Fulton St. Free.

Noon–5pm
Fireworks begin at 8pm
The all-day extravaganza, presented in conJunction with the River to River Festival, includes sing-alongs with Gordon from Sesame Street (whose core audience is, let’s face it, pushing 40), meet-and-greets with famous costumed characters and stage shows. The fun concludes after dark with a performance by the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the boom of a fireworks display.

This “sporting” event features DJs and live bands performing alongside world-class yo-yo athletes (oooh, check out those muscular fingers!).
