Alaska House
Kids won’t find glaciers or sled dogs at this newish gallery and cultural center, but they will learn a few things about the arctic state and its native tribes. An exhibit displays baskets and weaving made from materials such as whale baleen. A video-wall screens footage of remote villages, rivers teeming with wild salmon and caribou strolling the tundra. Brooklyn Cyclones
If the ultrawindy name doesn’t chill you out—or the fact that the stadium’s on Surf Avenue—consider some other brisk bennies to be had while watching these Coney Island minor leaguers: Bracing ocean air! Carvel ice cream and frozen ices! Plus the chance that mascot Sandy the Seagull will squirt you with his SuperSoaker. (718-449-8497, brooklyncyclones.com). Tickets start at $8.
Chill Spa
Cool your heels—and toes—with an “ice cream pedicure” at this Murray Hill wellness center with kitschy tropical decor. First comes a foot bath, then moisturizer and exfoliant (choose vanilla, chocolate or strawberry scent), followed by nail polish (options include frigid shades of blue and purple). The Poles and Their Neighbors Tour
Okay, so it has nothing to do with the ice-capped poles you may be fantasizing about. But this one-mile walking tour of Polish and other immigrant neighborhoods, conducted by New York Talks and Walks, does have sweat-curbing appeal. Admire Polish, Ukrainian and German churches and synagogues (naturally cool inside), a 19th-century Dutch farmhouse, a former Yiddish theater and more. Afterward, try the chilled borscht and fruit compote at Little Poland Restaurant. Jul 19 10:30–11:30am. Meet in front of St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, Second Ave at 10th St (718-591-4741, drphil@nycwalks.com). $10, children under 8 free. Reservations required.
Wave Hill
Shady nooks, swaths of woodland, winds that whoosh in from the Hudson River—yep, this public garden in the northwest Bronx lives up to its refreshing name. Kids can run barefoot on grass, or trail their fingers through a garden pool and scribble with the water on a nearby slate path. On Wednesdays in July, when the garden stays open till dusk, winemakers and other purveyors sell locally produced treats, such as Bronx honey and Brooklyn pickles. 675 W 252nd St, gate at Independence Ave and 249th St, Bronx (718-549-3200, wavehill.org). $6, ages 12 and under $2, under 6 free.
Winter Garden Theatre
If you like Abba and PG-13-ish Broadway musicals, Mamma Mia! could be your cure for “Mamma, I’m roasting.” (Like the 2008 film, the show draws giddy crowds despite bad reviews.) It’s at the Winter Garden all summer. 1634 Broadway at 50th St. 212-239-6200. Tickets: $56.25–$111.25.
