West Side Story
Description
Set against a backdrop of 1950s NYC gang turmoil, this Romeo and Juliet–inspired blockbuster returns to the Great White Way. The bilingual revival—some of the dialogue and songs are in Spanish—is directed by the original show’s librettist, Arthur Laurents, and it features well-loved standards such as “Tonight,” “America,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” Tony-winning choreography by Jerome Robbins will have your tweens wishing they could dance in the aisles. My family and I saw WSS yesterday, and for me, it is a BIG disappointment. The cast, although pleasant in performance, never evoked any connnection in emotion. They were bland, and that's a shame for such a tension filled play. The exception would be the actress who played Anita. Also, using Spanish for two prominent songs was extremely distracting and unnecessary. A lot of money was spent for a big let-down!
